Congress passed Creating Opportunities For Minor League, Professionals, Entertainers, and Teams through Legal Entry Act (COMPETE Act). This allows certain amateur and semi-professional athletes and coaches to qualify for temporary work visas. In the most general terms, applicants no longer have to be regionally, nationally, or internationally recognized. They must be sponsored by the team that employs them, or the league or association in which they compete. There are other requirements as well.
